About
Apsley House was the London home of the first Duke of Wellington, who remodelled it after his victories over Napoleon and filled its rooms with art and diplomatic gifts. The Waterloo Gallery and richly furnished Dining Room are the centrepieces, with paintings by Velazquez, Rubens, Goya, Titian and Bruegel giving art lovers plenty to examine beyond the military history. The collection also reveals how European rulers celebrated Wellington through elaborate gifts and presentation pieces. Visitors often recommend allowing a couple of hours and using the multimedia guide, rather than rushing through on the way to nearby Hyde Park. This is a historic townhouse with significant access limitations: steps lead to the entrance and to the lift itself, so discuss mobility needs before travelling. Large bags are restricted and there is no luggage storage. Pet dogs are not admitted, although assistance dogs are welcome.
