About

Two of the finest medieval rooms at Westminster Abbey open off the east side of its cloister, run by the Dean and Chapter of Westminster for English Heritage. The octagonal Chapter House, built by Henry III's royal masons in 1250, was where the Benedictine monks met each day, and it later hosted the King's Great Council and the Commons, forerunners of Parliament. A slender central column carries the vaulted ceiling above an original floor of glazed tiles bearing the king's arms and a Latin boast that this is the house of houses. The 11th-century Pyx Chamber, a monastic and royal treasury where boxes of newly minted coins were kept, has its own tiled floor and a 13th-century stone altar. Reviewers single out the wall paintings and the free entry with a membership card. Members walk into Dean's Yard from Broad Sanctuary and cross the square to the cloister; everyone else needs an Abbey ticket.
