No admission charge: the building is seen from the street, and inside by dining at Rules, a commercial restaurant where food and drink are paid for as normal and not covered by membership.
Arrive on foot, by bike or by public transport.
There is no car park. The National Trust gives Covent Garden and Embankment as the nearest London Underground stations; Charing Cross is also a short walk.
Driving pin: the restaurant itself at 35 Maiden Lane, from its Google listing, which matches a rooftop geocode of the address. The Trust's own page coordinate sits 340 m west in Cecil Court and is not used.
34-35 Maiden Lane in Covent Garden is the home of Rules, widely recognised as London's oldest restaurant, opened as an oyster house by Thomas Rule in 1798 and serving food continuously ever since. The building and a collection of menus, visitor books, caricatures, paintings and signage were gifted to the National Trust in autumn 2026; the Trust cares for the fabric while a commercial tenant keeps the restaurant running. Diners down the years have included Charles Dickens, Thackeray, Lillie Langtry, Laurence Olivier, Vera Lynn and Graham Greene, and the Grade II listed Victorian interiors are lined with theatre memorabilia and artwork; the cocktail bar leads through to a glass-roofed winter garden. Reviewers describe it as dining in a museum, with artwork covering every floor, and single out the steak and kidney pudding and the game. Tips from visitors: book a table in advance, and remember there is no admission as such, so the way to see the interiors is to eat or drink here, paid for as normal.
The National Trust publishes no opening calendar for 34-35 Maiden Lane and runs no tours or open days (checked 16 October 2026). The building is a working restaurant, Rules, run by a commercial tenant; its frontage can be seen from Maiden Lane at any time, and the interiors are seen by dining there.
Tables are booked through the Rules website (rules.co.uk) or on 020 7836 5314. Food and drink are paid for as normal and are not covered by membership.
Toilets are inside the restaurant for diners. The Trust lists no accessibility information for the building.
