Bayard's Cove Fort was built by Dartmouth between 1522 and 1536 as a final defence against ships that had passed the castles at the mouth of the Dart. Cut into the rocky riverbank at the end of the old quay, it held heavy guns behind thick walls and broad gunports. The interior is small and largely empty, but an interpretation board explains its place in the harbour's defences. Reviewers especially enjoy the river views framed by the openings and suggest including the fort in a visit to Dartmouth's waterfront. It can only be reached on foot, with approaches from Bayard's Cove or steps down from Southtown. The official walking approach joins the South West Coast Path for the final section. Use town parking and take care on wet steps; refreshments and toilets are available elsewhere in Dartmouth. Do not climb or jump from the walls.
