About
Totnes Castle crowns the town with a circular stone shell keep, built on the steep mound of a Norman motte-and-bailey stronghold. From the battlements, the rooftops, River Dart and surrounding hills explain why the site mattered to those controlling the crossing and the busy settlement below. Arrow slits and crenellations survive around the wall-walk, while the grassy bailey has become a sheltered place for picnics beneath mature trees. Visitors tend to treat this as a compact stop alongside the town's shops and cafes, with the view from the top the main reward. There are more than 70 uneven steps to the keep, so wheelchair users can explore the inner bailey but cannot reach the battlements. The moat walk follows the outside wall along narrow, uneven paths. Dogs are welcome on leads. Use the nearby town car parks and public toilets, as the castle has no toilets of its own.
