Berry Pomeroy Castle combines a late medieval fortress with the ruins of a Seymour mansion that ran out of money before its grand ambitions were realised. Above a wooded Devon valley, its gatehouse, gun positions and tall window openings reveal successive attempts to turn defence into display. The audio tour mixes the Pomeroy and Seymour families' history with the ghost stories that later drew sightseers to the abandoned buildings; visitors regularly recommend collecting a guide before exploring. Look for the surviving medieval wall painting in the gatehouse and the fireplaces that once served elaborate kitchens. Woodland paths follow the John Musgrave Trail towards the lake, with steep slopes and views back to the ruins. Dogs on leads are welcome in the castle, shop and cafe. The approach lanes are narrow, and the small car park is shared with the independently run cafe.

Accessibility: Grounds, shop and ground floor are partly accessible, but shallow entrance steps, slopes and spiral stairs restrict access. Two disabled bays; arrange set-down with staff.
