Kirkham House, Paignton

Kirkham House preserves a late medieval home in the middle of modern Paignton, built of local stone for what was probably a prosperous merchant or landowning family. Its traditional arrangement of hall, service rooms and more private chambers reveals a household with both status and a growing appetite for domestic comfort. Modern furniture illustrates how the rooms were used without disguising the old timberwork and architectural details. Visitors consistently praise the volunteers' knowledge and the care taken to explain the building, with some spending much longer inside than expected. Opening is limited to selected seasonal days, so check the official schedule before making a special journey. The upper floor is reached by stairs, and the narrow surrounding streets are awkward for turning a car. The separate Churchward Road car park is a more practical arrival point.
