Dartmouth and Kingswear Countryside is the National Trust's run of cliffs, farmland and coves on both sides of the Dart estuary. Above Dartmouth stands Gallants Bower, a ruined Civil War fort with 360-degree views over the town, while across the water a wartime military road runs from Brownstone past the Day Mark to Froward Point, where Brownstone Battery is a rare surviving Second World War coastal gun position. West of the river the coast path passes Compass Cove, where one of the earliest undersea telegraph cables to Guernsey was laid in 1870; eastwards, paths drop to the secluded beaches of Man Sands and Scabbacombe. Reviewers like walking the coast path from Little Dartmouth into town via the cafe at Dartmouth Castle. There are no toilets or dog bins, so come prepared. Dogs under close control are welcome on all the walks, on leads around sheep and on beaches. The Trust publishes circular walks from Little Dartmouth, Brownstone and Woodhuish Farm.
Open dawn to dusk every day according to the National Trust calendar.
No toilets, cafe or dog waste bins on site; Dartmouth Castle tearoom (not National Trust) is on the coast path near Dartmouth.
Undulating, uneven ground, steep in places, with no designated Blue Badge parking. A multi-user trail runs about a mile from Brownstone car park to the Day Mark and suits most mobility vehicles.
Open countryside, free for everyone. Parking charges apply to non-members at the National Trust car parks.
Five National Trust car parks, free for members
National Trust members park free by scanning at the machine or checking in with JustPark.
