About
Boscobel House became a refuge for Charles II after his defeat at Worcester in 1651, when he hid in an oak tree before spending a cramped night in the house's priest hole. The timber-framed hunting lodge uses an interactive tour to tell that story, while the oak pasture contains descendants of the original Royal Oak. Outside, the period garden, Victorian farm buildings, willow tunnel and play area give families more to explore beyond the royal escape. Visitors often praise the volunteers for making the history approachable and recommend leaving time for the gardens and refreshments. A permissive path leads towards White Ladies Priory, another of Charles's hiding places, about a mile away. Dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds only. Historic cobbles and stairs limit access, and there is no wheelchair access to the house; a virtual tour is available in the shop. Display a valid EH car sticker for member parking.
