Eltham Palace brings together the medieval royal residence where Henry VIII spent part of his childhood and the striking Art Deco home created for Stephen and Virginia Courtauld. The Great Hall's timber roof offers a sharp change of atmosphere from the dining room, drawing room and Virginia's gold-plated bathroom. Multimedia guides explain the couple's lives and travels, with a family version and dressing-up activities for younger visitors. Outside, the gardens combine a medieval bridge and moat with twentieth-century planting, while the visitor centre has a cafe and a travel-themed play area. Reviewers particularly enjoy the contrast between the two architectural periods and the knowledgeable room guides. Leave time for the gardens after touring the house. The lift is currently out of service, so upper-floor access requires stairs; a virtual tour provides an alternative. Pet dogs are not admitted, including to the gardens.

The house is due to close at noon, last entry 11:30, and grounds at 14:00, last entry 13:00, on 19 and 26 September. The Heritage Open Days text gives a conflicting 12:30 house closure on 19 September; confirm directly. The calendar also shows an early closure on 12 September during the Autumn Fair. The lift is currently out of order.

Usual September opening is 10am-5pm, with early-closure exceptions above. From 25 October opening is 10am-4pm, then weekends only from 2 November to 20 December. Confirm individual dates in the official calendar.

Last admission is normally 30 minutes before closing. Check the date-specific calendar and any notices before travelling.

EH members enter free with their membership card. National Trust membership alone does not cover admission. Advance booking is optional for ordinary visits and can save up to 15%; events may differ.

The lift is out of service; upper floors require stairs. The basement, Great Hall dais and Minstrels Gallery are stair-only. A multimedia virtual tour is available. The route from visitor centre includes gravel and cobbles.
