London Wall at Tower Hill preserves a substantial section of the defences built around Roman Londinium in about AD 200. The wall once stretched for roughly two and a half miles, marking the city's status as well as protecting its inhabitants. Later generations repaired and enlarged it, before surrounding buildings hid or removed much of the structure. Clearance has made this surviving section visible again, creating a striking encounter between ancient masonry and modern London. Reviewers appreciate how easily it can be included in a visit to Tower Hill and the nearby Tower of London. The official London Wall Walk follows the former circuit past other surviving sections. Arrive by public transport if possible; the wall stands beside a small garden near Tower Hill station, with steps on the approach from the underpass.
