Hive Beach at Burton Bradstock is the western gateway to Chesil Beach, the largest shingle ridge in the world, and sits on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site beneath Burton Cliff, whose alternating hard and soft layers of Bridport Sands glow gold in low sun. The National Trust looks after the beach, the car park and the coast east to Cogden Beach, a quieter shelving shingle strand backed by flower-filled farmland and popular with anglers. Families can pick up a free Mini Ranger Trail at the welcome hut for fossil hunting and wildlife spotting, and a Tramper mobility scooter can be hired for the clifftop paths. The Trust's easy 1.1-mile coast path walk from the car park looks from Golden Cap to Portland Bill, and the 2.2-mile Cogden Circular starts a mile east. Dogs are welcome on a short lead, but the central part of the beach is dog-free through the summer. Reviewers praise the seafood cafe on the shingle, though some find the prices steep. Tips from visitors: the beach shelves steeply with strong currents and no lifeguards, so paddle rather than swim, and parking is pay and display, free for members.
Dry conditions mean a high wildfire risk, please help protect the surrounding area by not lighting any barbecues. There is no lifeguard service operating, beware of strong currents, shelving beach, large waves and unstable cliffs.
