Black Carts Turret - Hadrian's Wall

Black Carts Turret sits within a long surviving section of Hadrian's Wall west of Chesters Roman Fort. The remains let you examine the relationship between the small lookout tower and the wall running away across the fields, with broad views north from this part of the frontier. Its surviving masonry also makes it easier to picture the regular sequence of turrets and milecastles that once supported the soldiers along the boundary. Reviewers appreciate the informative board, quiet surroundings and amount of wall still visible, but note the need to walk to the site. The Chesters Roman Trail includes Black Carts, using the Hadrian's Wall National Trail through the surrounding countryside. English Heritage recommends the car park at Chesters and says there is no parking at the turret itself. Expect possible mud and farm livestock.
