Brunton Turret - Hadrian's Wall

Brunton Turret preserves a particularly substantial piece of Hadrian's Wall near Chollerford, with stonework reaching about two and a half metres high. Men of the Twentieth Legion built this section, and the surviving turret shows how the small lookout structures fitted into the frontier between its milecastles. The contrast between the tower's walls and the surrounding field makes this a useful stop for understanding construction at a human scale. Visitors appreciate being able to study the remains closely and often mention the quiet setting, although steps, mud and livestock can affect the approach. The Chesters Roman Trail links Brunton with other nearby remains. English Heritage recommends parking at Chesters Roman Fort and allowing about twenty minutes to walk here; parking and admission to the fort have separate arrangements.
