About
Chesters Roman Fort occupies a riverside site in the Tyne valley where around 500 Roman cavalry troops were once based. The remains preserve barracks, other fort buildings and a military bath house beside the river, giving a clear sense of life beyond Hadrian's Wall itself. Victorian landowner John Clayton rediscovered the site, and the Clayton Museum displays the carved stones and other finds gathered from the Roman frontier. A family trail encourages children to look for rubbing stones concealed among the buildings, while the Coffee House offers a break after exploring. Dogs on leads are welcome around the fort but cannot enter the museum. Reviewers repeatedly praise the bath house and the museum's collection of carvings. Allow time for both, and wear footwear suitable for grass and gravel: the ground can be uneven and the descent to the baths has steps. Ramps provide access to the shop and museum, but parts of the bath house remain difficult to reach.

Accessibility: Ramps serve the shop and museum. Routes combine paved slabs, gravel and mown grass; access to the bath house is restricted by steps and slopes. EH recommends bringing a companion for this area; a wheelchair is available on request.
