Chesters Bridge Abutment shows how the Romans carried Hadrian's Wall, and later the Military Way, across the North Tyne. On the eastern bank, substantial blocks of masonry preserve evidence of two successive bridges, with scattered architectural stones helping to suggest the scale of the later crossing. The remains are visible from Chesters Roman Fort across the water, but reaching them requires a separate approach. Visitors often praise the surviving engineering and recommend allowing time for this short addition to a fort visit. English Heritage directs walkers through a small gate off the B6318 near the traffic lights, then along the old railway alignment beside the river. The approach forms part of the Chesters Roman Trail. Use the fort's car park and allow for the roadside walk; admission to the abutment is free. Paths can be muddy and uneven, and the riverside site may flood.
