Wallington was given to the nation by Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan, Socialist MP and self-styled 'illogical Englishman', and the house holds the collections of ten generations of the Blackett and Trevelyan families: ceramics, books and curiosities in every room, and a Central Hall ringed with huge Pre-Raphaelite paintings telling the story of Northumberland. For many the 13,500-acre estate is the bigger draw. The Walled Garden loved by Lady Mary Trevelyan is entered through Neptune's Gate and steps down to colourful borders; the river walk follows the Wansbeck; West Wood holds a wildlife hide, a wellbeing wood and four play areas with a zip line, fort and play train. Families can ride the Dragon cycle trail, dogs are welcome across the grounds. Reviewers praise the well-kept gardens and the friendly volunteers.
