Wasdale is a remote farming valley in the western Lake District where Wastwater, the deepest lake in England and a special area of conservation, lies beneath Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain. The screes plunging into the far shore helped the view top a 2007 ITV poll for Britain's favourite view. The National Trust's Hollow Stones route up Scafell Pike starts from its Lake Head car park beside the Wasdale campsite; quieter options are the Greendale and Middle Fell walk to Greendale Tarn and the Pillar trail, with over 800 metres of ascent, and dogs can be walked under close control in Low Wood. Visitors staying at the campsite praise its small shop, the stream where children paddle and the setting at the foot of the fells. One tip from regular visitors: the narrow lakeside road is slow when busy, so allow extra time. Lake Head fills early on fine weekends; car parks are pay and display, free for members, and there are no bins, so take litter home.
