Castlerigg Stone Circle stands in an open field above Keswick, with the Lake District fells forming a broad backdrop to its ring of 38 stones. Probably built around 4,500 years ago in the late Neolithic period, it offers a direct encounter with a prehistoric monument without a visitor-centre circuit or a timed tour.
