Derwent Island House is an 18th-century Italianate villa set on a wooded island in Derwentwater near Keswick. The house was built around 1778 for Joseph Pocklington, an eccentric who staged mock naval battles on the lake. Open to visitors on just five days each year, the island offers a unique perspective of the surrounding Lakeland fells and the lake itself.
